The house was quiet that night.
Rain tapped against the windows while Milner sat alone in the living room, staring at an old photograph he had found in a drawer. It showed Sting when she was about six years old, standing beside him with a huge smile on her face.

He remembered taking that photograph.

He remembered promising her that he would always be there.

And he remembered breaking that promise.

A few minutes later, Sting came downstairs. She stopped when she saw him holding the photograph.

“You still have that?”

Milner looked up.

“I found it in the drawer.”

Sting walked slowly toward him and sat on the opposite side of the room.

“I thought you threw everything away.”

“I could never throw this away.”

She looked at the photograph.

“You missed a lot.”

Milner swallowed.

“I know.”

“No, Dad,” she said quietly. “I don’t think you understand how much you missed.”

He remained silent.

“I used to wait for you,” Sting continued. “When I was little, I would sit near the window whenever I heard a car outside because I thought maybe you had finally come home. Sometimes I would stay awake until I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore, and the next morning I’d wake up and realize that you still weren’t there.”

Milner’s eyes became wet.

“I wanted to come back.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I know.”

“You keep saying that,” Sting said, her voice beginning to shake. “You keep saying that you know, but you weren’t here when I needed someone to know. You weren’t here when I was scared, you weren’t here when I was sick, you weren’t here when I needed someone to tell me that I wasn’t worthless.”

Milner lowered his head.

“Who told you that?”

Sting looked away.

“People in this house.”

Milner’s expression changed.

“Was it your stepmother?”

Sting didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered, “She made me believe that I was a burden.”

Milner closed his eyes for a moment.

“I’m sorry.”

Sting laughed quietly through her tears.

“Do you know how many times I wanted to hear those words from you? Not from someone else. From you.”

Milner stood up, but Sting immediately shook her head.

“Please don’t.”

He stopped.

“I don’t know how to fix this,” he said.

“You can’t fix twelve years.”

“I know.”

“You can’t give me back all the birthdays you missed or all the nights I cried because I thought my own father had forgotten me.”

“I know.”

“You can’t make me a little girl again.”

Milner’s voice broke.

“No, I can’t.”

He looked at her.

“But if you’ll let me, I can be here for the person you are now. I can listen to everything you want to tell me, even if it takes months or years. I can sit here every night if that’s what you need. I can’t change what I did, Sting, but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life making the same mistake by leaving you alone again.”

Sting stared at him.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

Then she slowly moved closer.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you yet.”

Milner nodded.

“You don’t have to.”

“I’m still angry.”

“You have every right to be.”

“And sometimes I hate you for leaving.”

Milner’s eyes filled with tears.

“I understand.”

Sting finally began to cry.

“I just wanted my dad.”

Milner sat beside her, but he didn’t touch her until she reached for his hand first.

When she finally did, he held it carefully.

“I’m here now,” he whispered.

Sting leaned against his shoulder.

“I wish you had been here before.”

Milner closed his eyes.

“So do I.”

And for the first time in twelve years, father and daughter sat together without pretending that everything was okay.

It wasn’t okay.

But they were finally talking.

And sometimes, after years of silence, that was where healing had to begin.
